Big Egos ARC Giveaway

Big EgosThe Summer of Bastards and Egos rolls on with a Big Egos ARC giveaway. For those who might not be up on the lingo, an ARC is an Advance Reader Copy. Also called an Uncorrected Proof. It looks like a book. It feels like a book. It even smells like a book. And it is a book. Just not the finished version that will be published on August 6.

So how can you get a hold of one of these ARCs, you ask? Well, let me tell you. But first, a little background.

The protagonist of Big Egos works for Engineering Genetics Organizations and Systems (aka EGOS), the company behind Big Egos—a revolutionary role-playing game that allows you to become a dead celebrity or fictional character for 6-8 hours by injecting a DNA-laced cocktail into your brain stem. And our hero has been injecting so many Big Egos that he’s starting to lose the ability to separate fact from fiction. His every fantasy is the new reality. And the more roles he plays, the less of him remains.

Big Egos is a book about identity. It’s about the roles we all play. It’s about what happens when you’re constantly pretending to be someone you’re not.

Got it? Good. Now, on to the giveaway…

There are three ways you can enter:

1) Leave a reply to this post with your answer to the following question: What dead celebrity or fictional character would you want to be?

Enter one way or enter all three ways to increase your chances of winning.

  1. If I could be any dead celebrity it would probably have to be Charlie Chaplin. I have read his autobiography about 3 times and his life was filled with so many stories.

  2. I’d love to be Bruce Lee – minus the early tragic death.

  3. I would want to be Elvis. If you’re talking about EGO….who better?

  4. Mona, Chaplin makes a brief appearance in the book. And James, the first chapter will be right up your alley then.

  5. Ever since I read The Atlantic Monthly article about the case for Shakespeare and the case of Edward DeVere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, I’ve chosen for the latter. I’d like to be Edward DeVere to see if I REALLY wrote the plays! Would he be a Big Ego because he did it or a Little Ego because he didn’t take credit?

  6. James Dean – I’d make sure he didn’t have that damn car accident that robbed us of a great talent.

  7. I wouldn’t mind being Sherlock Holmes for 6-8 hours. Possibly longer.

I haven’t had the chance to read Lucky Bastards yet, but was excited to see the $1.99 Kindle sale..bought it right away and can’t wait to read it! Thanks for the heads up in the newsletter, of course. Also, thanks for holding this contest!

  8. Don Ho.

When I was a kid in Hawaii, my dad used to island hop and I just assumed hawaii was the center of the universe. Hawaii 5-0 was on, all the other shows would have Hawaiian episodes, I just figured the whole world was like the islands.

So with this Hawaii-centric pre-adolescent point of view, when I first saw Elvis Presley, my thought was, “Who does this haole think he is, trying to rip off Don Ho like that!”

  9. i’d like to be Marilyn Monroe because she has always been a hero of mine. One of many, but I want to be her whenever I get tired of my life.

  10. Edgar Allen Poe …. Need I say more?

  11. I would be Sherlock Holmes. Constantly, seeing and putting pieces together might drive me insane, but it would still be fun.

  12. Gilda Radner. Brilliant Funny!

  13. If given the chance, I’d inject a little bit of Mr. Hyde from the BBC’s JEKYLL, a modern day interpreation of the Jekyll & Hyde mythos, because he is everything I’m not. I constantly feel like Dr. Jeykll. I’m kind, a bit too courteous and all too gullible. Soft spoken, maybe a bit of pushover. But Hyde does has he pleases with no moral compass to guide him. He’s happy, while also being mayhem incarnate despite his not knowing so. He isn’t going out of his way to be awful, he just is. Like a psychopath with the intentions of a three year old.

Unbridled happiness, no matter the situation, for six to eight hours at a time. The only side effect is that I might leave a few bodies in my way, but everything has a price.

  14. Hmm, meant to say “wake” in place of “way” in the last sentence, but the point stands.

    Comment by Andrew Ryan — July 5, 2013 @ 7:13 am

  15. I would be Dick York, to be able to kiss Elizabeth Montgomery for 160 Bewitched episodes—minus the back pains that killed his career.

  16. Who would I want to be? That’s a hard one? I think it would be interesting to be The Doctor. I also would not mind being Edgar Allen Poe just to see what went on in his head.

    Comment by Skip Johnson — July 5, 2013 @ 7:34 am

  17. I think I’d go with Marilyn, so I could have a lesbian affair as her…

  18. If I could be any dead celebrity, I think I would have to be Beatrice Arthur. She’s so wonderful and hilarious. I have admired her since I was a little girl watching Golden Girls. She’s tall, has some pretty kick ass outfits and who wouldn’t want to be best friend with Betty White?
Either her or Natalie Wood. West Side Story is the best. Plus I’ve always wanted an excuse to run around singing I feel pretty in public.
I would also love to be Marylyn Monroe. Not as the sex symbol, but more for the woman with endometriosis. However, I would do things differently and stand up against the evil disease and fight for a cure.

  19. I would want to be Heath Ledger during the preproduction and filming of The Dark Knight. Though I’ve always been a fan of graphic novels, I’ve never loved the Batman mythos until the movies. Heath Ledger’s Joker made the movie series plausible, which is widely missing from the genre. There was no act the Joker did that couldn’t be done tomorrow, and that made it truly gripping (and scary as hell when you think about it). Also, his process was something they warned us against while studying theatre in college – total immersion into a character, and not being able to separate yourself from fiction and reality. There’s something passionate and dangerous in there, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t appealing.

  20. I’m gonna go with Destiny. Sure, she’s a bitch, but it seems like she has fun.
